Although it has been a busy Term 1, it is pleasing to see the quality of learning that is occurring in every classroom. Our prep students are settling into their new school routines and our new Year 6 leaders are doing an amazing job of being positive role models for the younger students at Landsborough. They have taken on the job of leading school parades, raising the flags and leading by example with much enthusiasm and these high standards are spreading through our school. We are set for a great year at Landsborough State School!

Leave
I will be taking leave in week 10 of this term. Whist I am away, Mrs Kylie Clark will be our Acting Principal and Mrs Miranda Martin will be our Acting Head of Department. I have no doubt they will do an amazing job and our students, staff and community will support them in these roles. As this will be my last newsletter for the term, I would like to say thank you to our students, staff and families for a great start to Term 1, 2025. I will be looking forward to reconnecting with everyone in Term 2.
Yours in Education
Selina Barry Principal

Fluency In Reading
What is fluency?
Fluency relates to the accuracy, rate, and prosody (expression and phrasing) that a student uses when reading. It is an outcome of foundational word reading skills including decoding, phonemic awareness (blending, segmenting, and manipulating), vocabulary, syntax and grammar, and background knowledge.
Fluency is closely related to reading comprehension. Students who are fluent readers tend to be better able to understand what they are reading. As fluency is an outcome or product, it is not something that we can directly ‘do’ or ‘teach’ through a single routine or activity. Word-level fluency begins to develop with phonics instruction, as students become more automatic at decoding words using their phonic knowledge and phonemic awareness skills. For students to be fluent readers at the text level, they first need to be fluent word readers. Once students become fluent at word level reading, other components —such as vocabulary, syntax and grammar, and background knowledge support text level reading fluency.
How fluent are you as an adult reader? Skilled adult readers read approximately 180 words correct per minute. Test yourself and see how you go. If you have any concerns with your child’s reading, please speak to their teacher or come and chat to myself.
Kylie Clark A/Head of Department Curriculum

We are delighted to share the wonderful progress our Prep children have made during their early weeks at school. It has been a term full of excitement, learning, and new friendships, and we are incredibly proud of how well our young learners have settled into school life.
The children have embraced their new environment with enthusiasm. They have quickly adapted to daily routines and independent learning activities. Their confidence has grown each day as they have explored the classroom and playground, learning to share, take turns, and build relationships with their peers.
Our Prep children have engaged in a variety of fun and educational activities to develop their early literacy and numeracy skills. They have been exploring letters and sounds through phonics sessions, developing their fine motor skills and enhancing their number recognition through hands-on counting games.
As we move into the next term, we are excited to continue fostering a love for learning among our Prep students. We will introduce new learnings, encourage further independence, and provide even more opportunities for exploration and discovery.
It has been wonderful to see the children grow and thrive, and we look forward to another exciting term ahead!

MYCP Program
Concerns regarding young children with difficult and defiant behaviours? The Management of Young Children Program (MYCP) is available in 2025.
The MYCP is supported by Landsborough SS, Beerwah SS and Elimbah SS (therefore no cost for these families) and is a practical and individualised behaviour support program for parents and carers of young children aged 2½ to 7 years and their families. It is a well-established and evidence based early intervention program targeting children who display defiant or oppositional behaviour with the aim of reducing such problematic behaviours in primary school and beyond.
Other families/ schools outside of this catchment area have the option of accessing the ‘user pay’ option which is currently $750 for 6 x 1 hour individualised sessions. For more information or interest in participating in the program, please see the school website link or contact the Landsborough SS office 5436 2777.
The P&C is made up of parents just like you! The primary goal of the P&C is to enhance the educational opportunities for the students at our school. But along with that, it is also a great platform to build lifelong friendships with other like-minded parents, enhance your skill set, become more informed on important school matters and policies, provide parent input and give back to our wonderful school community.
Being a P&C member does not mean that you must attend all meetings. Our meetings are where all decisions are made, therefore attendance is encouraged so you can have your say.
Our next meeting is our AGM, scheduled for Wednesday26th March at 5.30pm.We invite you to join us as we work towards making 2025 another successful P&C year.
At this meeting, all positions will be declared vacant, and elections will take place to fill these roles for the upcoming year.
It’s your chance to get involved, make a difference, and help shape the future of our school community. No experience needed – just enthusiasm!
Hop in and grab some tickets in our Egg-cellent Easter Raffle! Not only will you have the chance to win a fantastic prize, you will also be supporting the P&C Association and our students.
