I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our school community for your cautionary and calm response to the impending severe weather warnings last week. It was certainly a fluctuating weather system, which kept us all questioning what it was going to do. Thank you for supporting each other and our school to ensure that everyone was safe. We are hopeful that this week will be back to normal running procedures, but we will still keep an eye on the forecast and take directions from our region, with more rain expected.
Our thoughts are with those who have been impacted in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Northern NSW. A reminder that if you have been impacted in any way that the school has support services and policies in place. Please reach out, we are here to help.
Morning Routines
Just a reminder that students should not be on school site prior to 8am. Prep – Year 2 students are supervised from 8am in the hall and 3-6 students are supervised from 8am under F block. Students are expected to be in these areas if they are at school during 8-8:30am. Students are not permitted to be in classrooms prior to this time, as this is teacher preparation time for the day. This may also be the time a teacher has organised a meeting with a parent or another staff member. Thank you for supporting this morning routine.
P&C AGM
The Annual General Meeting for the P&C will be held on Wednesday 26 March at 5:30pm in the library. All positions will become vacant. If you are interested in holding a position this year, please come along to the meeting and notify our P&C of your interest so they can explain the nomination process with you.
NAPLAN
Due to the weather event, we have pushed our NAPLAN timetable back by one day to ensure all of our systems and processes are ready to go. We will complete our practice test on Wednesday morning and start the writing test on Thursday. School attendance and being on time is particularly important over the next two weeks, as most testing will occur in the first session of the school day. Good luck to all of our year 3 and year 5 students who are sitting these tests. We look forward to sharing our overall school achievements with our community later in the year.
Yours in Education Selina Barry Principal
Head of Department – Curriculum
Information about NAPLAN
NAPLAN commences this week! Our students in Year 3 and 5 will take part in NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN assesses the skills of all students in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy.
NAPLAN tests help you to understand how your child is progressing in the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy. NAPLAN is also an important tool in helping us to identify how our education programs are working and what needs to improve.
You might hear your child talking about NAPLAN.
When your child comes home from school, they might mention NAPLAN. They might talk about NAPLAN activities they have done in class, including practice tests.
Students don’t need to practise for NAPLAN. But we do want your child to be familiar with:
the online test environment
the device they’ll use during the test
the different kinds of questions, how they use their time and how they check their work.
So when your child talks about practice tests, they’re talking about resources like the NAPLAN public demonstration site. This site helps students to become familiar with the different kinds of questions they will see in a real NAPLAN test.
Your child’s welfare is the most important thing.
We do these activities to help your child feel safe, confident and capable. They will know what to expect and what they have to do. Students do not need to stress about NAPLAN. It’s just one part of their school program, and we simply encourage students to do the best they can.
NAPLAN is for everyone.
Across the country, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN. The online tests have many features to enhance the test experience for students with and without disability. We also provide adjustments and alternative test formats to allow students with disability to access the tests and show what they know and can do. Talk to us if you need more information.
Have a go at the test yourself and contact us if you need to know more.
See what NAPLAN will be like for your child by visiting the public demonstration site. Find out more by visiting the department’s NAPLAN page for parents and carers.
ACARA’s student privacy notice on the collection of student information for NAPLAN is also available.
If you have any other questions about NAPLAN, please let me know.
We are excited that your child gets the chance to show their learning in NAPLAN this year.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Monday 31st March. This opportunity allows parents/carers to discuss any issues or concerns, and to ask how children are performing and progressing at school. Later this week we will be emailing information on how to book your Parent Teacher Interview.

Halogen National Young Leaders Day
On Monday 24th February, 13 of our illustrious young leaders from Landsborough travelled to the Brisbane Convention Centre to attend the Halogen National Young Leaders Conference, accompanied by Mrs Weir (Year 6 teacher) and Mrs Bec Welke (Teacher Aide). This conference was attended by a multitude of schools from all over the south-east corner and the Sunshine Coast. It was a ‘jam packed’, exciting day filled with motivational speeches from inspiring Leaders, sports champions and authors/artists. The Governor General, Ms Sam Mostyn spoke of the importance of being a ‘good listener’, empathetic, compassionate and leading with kindness and respect for traditions and cultures. Artist and author, Kasey Rainbow shared her own personal ‘challenges’, ranging from her early school years to post-secondary school days, to where she is now – a successful business entrepreneur. Her ‘tips’ on how she overcame adversity and persisted to where she is today were heart-warming and captivating. Dayne Zorko, captain of the AFL Brisbane Lions, had many tales to share of persistence and resilience in attaining the leadership and sporting positions he holds today. Supercar driver, winner of the Bathurst 1000 2024, Todd Hazelwood, spoke encouragingly about his rise to success, the traits that he has observed in good leaders along the way and the characteristics he has adopted. Our Landsborough Student Leaders gained a massive insight into what being a ‘great leader’ involves from these inspiring and motivational leaders. They are all inspired to put this knowledge into practice this year at school. We cannot wait to see what they do!

MYCP Program
Concerns regarding young children with difficult and defiant behaviours? The Management of Young Children Program (MYCP) is available in 2025.
The MYCP is supported by Landsborough SS, Beerwah SS and Elimbah SS (therefore no cost for these families) and is a practical and individualised behaviour support program for parents and carers of young children aged 2½ to 7 years and their families. It is a well-established and evidence based early intervention program targeting children who display defiant or oppositional behaviour with the aim of reducing such problematic behaviours in primary school and beyond.
Other families/ schools outside of this catchment area have the option of accessing the ‘user pay’ option which is currently $750 for 6 x 1 hour individualised sessions. For more information or interest in participating in the program, please see the school website link or contact the Landsborough SS office 5436 2777.
We encourage all LSS families to come along to our P&C meetings, join the P&C committee and/or participate in our events and fundraising activities throughout the year. Our meetings are where all decisions are made, so please come along and have your say.
Our next meeting is our AGM, scheduled for Wednesday 26th March at 5.30pm.We invite you to join us as we work towards making 2025 another successful P&C year.
At this meeting, all positions will be declared vacant, and elections will take place to fill these roles for the upcoming year.
It’s your chance to get involved, make a difference, and help shape the future of our school community. No experience needed – just enthusiasm!
Keep an eye out for a copy in your child’s school bag! Orders close Tuesday 18 March – so don’t miss out! Ordering is quick and easy via LOOP. With plenty of titles to appeal to all ages, you are sure to find something to support your child’s reading journey.
